Q-How has growing up in California played a part in you pursuing your artistry?
A-I love everything about westcoast hiphop. Maybe, I’m biased lol. But that old school sound is something I will try to achieve in my music currently with more of a modern twist. Not to mention, my up and coming ep will be dedicated to where I’m from, Inglewood. I want to bring back that nostalgic feeling of what it’s like growing up in Inglewood in the 90’s.
Q-How long have you been in Dallas? What are some of the cultural differences you’ve noticed?
A-I’ve been in dallas since 2011. 13 years! I can’t believe it myself. I would say, when I first moved to dallas I was definitely in culture shock. It was a lot for me to acclimate to. People in LA are very to themselves, not a lot of small talk going on. We really do mind our business. But I have grown to love the southern hospitality here in dallas.
Q-You started out as an Actress & Writer. What brought the transition to music?
A-Honestly, as my momma has told me and others. I’ve been singing since I was 3 months old. She said I would hum as little as small infant. I’ve always loved to sing. I would literally force the kids on my block on 4th ave in Inglewood to be in my little group and I was Beyoncé and they were the other members in destinys child lol. But to make a long story short.
I was on set winter 2022 in a movie called “First Love Movie” and I was casted as a singer in this film. I had to rehearse and hit the studio, and of course perform like a real singer and it really ignited the spark. I felt like maybe, I could take a real chance and do this foreal.
Q-Being that you were already in the entertainment industry did you already feel confident?
A-I’ve always been extremely confident in general and I carry that into my artistry. I feel like that’s what I want to sell in my music, confidence. My confidence carries me to get shit done.
Q-Has the music superseded the acting currently? Or is it more of a dual thing?
A-Oh definitely hasn’t. Screenwriting and acting is my foundation. I’m taking a hiatus from auditioning. However, I have 3 films I’m in now that will be out soon. And in the near future I do hope to start up my own production company and get my film off the ground.
Q-Does acting & singing come naturally or do you put more effort into one?
A-Honestly, both come naturally. I’m an artist at my core. To entertain and express myself through work of just creating whether I am playing a character or singing a song and anything for me is natural. It’s the expression that matters. Far as effort. I put my best effort in anything that I do creatively! One thing people know Gen for is that I’m passionate and incredibly talented.
Q-You have your first single on the way. Whats the name and what’s it about?
A-Yes, it’s called “IGN” (I Get Niggas).
The song is about a woman who pretty much can have any man she wants. Getting a man is nothing. It’s easy. However, she has the attention of them all accept for one. The one and only man she wants. He seems so unattainable.
Q-What can the listeners expect from it?
A-They can expect to be catapulted into a time capsule. A nostalgic 90’s west coast sound with a modern twist. I really am dedicating this entire Ep to Inglewood.
Q-Any other projects you’d like to plug?
A-I make an appearance in a film called “Deeper”. Also, in a series called “House Arrest” season 2. And I’m also costarring in “Dynasty the movie”, starring Lil Flip.
