Could you kindly share the origins of your modeling career? What initially ignited your passion for this field?
The start of my modeling career started when I was a student at Kings Borough Community College. I saw the flyer on my school bulletin board. They were looking for models. I gave it a try, and since then I didn’t want to stop there, so I kept going. I’ve always loved fashion, as a little girl around the age of five years old. I remembered playing dress up in my grandmother’s closet, and makeup. Right after, she went to church. And also playing with Barbie dolls. I always get excited to dress them up and do their hair and makeup. That’s where I started with the styling and my love for fashion.
We’d love to learn about your typical daily routine, especially how you prepare for those remarkable photo shoots and runway appearances.
My daily routine is full of things as a model, as a student, and as an entrepreneur. I would say I love to multitask; I scheduled time for each one of them. For example, at 1 pm I have to focus on studying/homework. Around 4 p.m. I have to take care of business and get things done for my brands. If I have a show or a photo shoot, that’s what I focus on the whole day, and take care of other things the day before or after the show.
Before a show or a photo shoot, I go to bed early. I get a good rest so that I can be ready. I packed my suitcase. I brought as many items as I knew I would need the day before.
Throughout your career, you’ve amassed an impressive portfolio. Are there any specific projects or collaborations that stand out as particularly memorable for you?
Throughout my modeling career, I have had plenty. One I will always remember was seeing myself and my full name in the middle of a Times Square billboard around thousands of people. That’s something I will always remember. As well as my first magazine cover.
The fashion industry is currently undergoing significant changes, emphasizing diversity and inclusivity. How do you view your role in contributing to these transformative shifts?
Seeing the modeling industry, including those who will never think about being a model due to their height and size, is a beautiful thing to witness. Who wants to see only one type of person on a runway every time you go to a fashion show? That seems boring to me. Now there is more flavor and attitude on the runway that I really like.
Facing challenges is a natural part of any career. Could you elaborate on some obstacles you’ve encountered during your journey in modeling and how you effectively navigated through them?
For me I’m always ready for challenges, I always tell myself I’m in the right career. As someone who doesn’t care much about the naysayers, Medjine will do what she wants. I can tell you that this is a tough industry. If you don’t have thick skin, don’t even think about doing it. In the beginning of modeling, it was not easy, especially getting to know new people in the industry. Some of those people are not very nice people. At the end of the day, that’s what will make you, you. And motivate you to do more.
Staying attuned to ever-evolving fashion trends is crucial. How do you maintain your fashion acumen and adapt your style to suit various professional engagements?
I don’t follow trends. I’ve always had my own style. As a stylist/designer, I like to start my own trends. You will either see it in my outfit or in my designs. I am a trendsetter; I don’t focus much on what’s new or what other people are wearing.
As a role model within the modeling community, do you have any words of wisdom or advice for emerging talents who are embarking on their modeling careers?
My advice to new models who just started in the modeling industry is to be yourself. Don’t pay attention to what other models are doing. Focus on you and be careful of who you work with. This is a petty industry, and the ego is very strong. Get to know people first and do your research. Don’t get scammed, and don’t be afraid to say no if you don’t want to do something.
Social media platforms have become integral tools in the modeling industry. How do you leverage platforms like Instagram, Twitter, or others to engage with your fans and fellow professionals?
For me, I use social media for a good purpose. I promote myself and my brands. As a model and entrepreneur, I have to post very often. Because if you are not posting, are you really a public figure? I’d say promote yourself as much as you can and also get paid. Once you realize that, you will focus less on social media drama. Use it for a worthy cause.
Sustainable fashion is gaining prominence. Are there specific eco-conscious fashion brands or initiatives that you find particularly commendable or support?
Sustainable fashion is getting recognition very fast in the fashion industry. I strongly support sustainability. One sustainability brand that I really like is Stella McCartney. They use organic cotton that eliminates the use of toxic chemicals.
Looking ahead, what aspirations and forthcoming projects can you share with your audience regarding your ongoing journey in the modeling realm?
I started liking NYFW street style during the pandemic when there was no fashion show to go to. I styled myself during fashion week and called it New York Fashion Week street style. I’m starting to like street fashion. Believe it or not, fashion is in the street if you really pay attention to what people are wearing on a daily basis. I also enjoy going to fashion events as a model/designer. I want to see other designers’ creativity. And relax for once and enjoy a show or two, everything that goes behind the scenes. And how much effort it takes to create a fashion show.
