The pandemic shutdown in summer 2020 saw a plethora of Hip-Hop music being released – everything from Nas’ King’s Disease to AZ’s long-awaited sequel, Doe or Die 2. The independent Hip-Hop scene was on fire with back-to-back music from some of the underground’s best.
One MC on my radar is Chase Fetti. I first heard him rap on “Red Moon Rising” by Rick Hyde of Black Soprano Family. Chase Fetti’s raspy voice and long cornrows remind me of a much younger man fresh off the porch. But his pen game and train of thought prove otherwise.
Chase Fetti is a big fish in a small pond, coming from Cliffwood, NJ, a small town steps away from the beach. With hoop dreams in high school, rap and ball became life. The music tells the story of an enterprising MC applying street principles to the music game, collaborating with other artists on features and tours.
Fully produced by godBLESSbeatz, This Thing of Ours (2020) is a 19-minute, 12-song EP. With no featured artists, Chase Fetti held his own, bar for bar. True to its mafia theme, each song is named after characters from Goodfellas. “Paulie” and “Jimmy Conway” provide the perfect sequence, so much so that Chase Fetti filmed a video featuring visuals for both songs.
