Sev7en Taylor just dropped the new EP: Their Eyes Were Watching Venus Gods. The follow up to The Qliphoth, this project is inspired by Sev7en’s deeper connection with the planet Venus and his newfound growth as a recording artist. The new EP also introduces both his alter egos, Jimmie and Ivy. Find out more about the EP and Sev7en’s journey in between projects below.
What’s the inspiration behind your new EP?
Sev7en Taylor: I feel like the inspiration came from me understanding planet Venus. (The planet I’m born under as a Libra.) Mother Venus, she’s so forgiving because she governs love and all the various versions of it. My Saturn return truly opened that space for me from break up to the death of my ex and then life after all has happened. I found myself in this space of truly understanding how strong LOVE is and how we feed off it; sometimes we get addicted to it. Their Eyes Were Watching Venus Gods opens the subconscious pending diary in me and allows me to create. Mother Venus is truly creative; so the way I rap/ sing these real life stories, I truly get to connect with my audience in a whole new way.
How is the new EP connected to your last project?
Sev7en Taylor: She’s the second daughter of The Qliphoth. Instead of doing multiple deluxe versions, I want to dive deeper and see the hidden and updated stories that live inside of me. Voodoo Child is the first daughter; which is the first space after death/grief.
How does the new EP showcase your growth as an artist?
Sev7en Taylor: I’m truly playing with all the colors of RAP. I’m going into the subdivisions of it as well. I’m truly talking all my s***. While painting a story in the listener’s head. I’m very excited and proud of this extended space. I also let my alter egos “Jimmie” and “Ivy” out.
What does the cover art represent to you?
Sev7en Taylor: Horror within. How that energy truly pushed me forward. I’m also a big fan of horror/scary movies. It also in a way pays homage to Bless a Bee (2021). I faced a lot of closing and opening chapters last year. I stepped in the studio as a newly 30-year-old creative being and this time it’s personal. These wins are personal. I’m focused.
How do you maintain your independence as an independent artist?
Sev7en Taylor: My spiritual team guides me from my music to business deals, etc. I don’t allow anyone to convert or own any art I’ve made. Even when I do sign business deals/distribution deals, I will make sure all that coin is coming back to my pockets. I’m focused on building an empire and a space for black/brown men who can feel seen through their queerness, without feeling like they’re being limited or held to a stuck space. That’s why every time you hear any new record of mine, I’m always taking it to another level and learning from the greats. I am a student to music, the entity she is. I discovered who she truly is through my own studies and making of my album The Qliphoth.
