In today’s industry, many Hip Hop fans feel that artistry & lyricism have taken a back seat. Mt Vernon Mc Aaqil Ali shows this doesn’t apply to him. At the age of 12, he has been penning verses and has been perfecting his craft since. Aaqil says he’s drawn inspiration from the 90s era and list acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Black Thought, Yasiin Bey, and Common as some of the people he listened to.
Aaqil has been building his brand by working with other artists in the industry, doing tours, and connecting with the Overseas Hip Hop community. I got a chance to also feature him on my YouTube album promo show “Listen Up”. His efforts show he understands that work plays even more of a factor than talent.
I’d say while he provides lyricism, he also understands the value of making light-hearted songs and being diverse sonically. It’s clear he respects his Pen but isn’t stuck in a box. Mixing food for thought with music you can vibe with. His last solo effort “Dirty Spirits” produced by Yosonova was released in 2021 and reflects this.
This year he released a collaborative album with Buffalo Mc Y.N.X 716 called “Dusty Souls”. Great project with synergy from the MCS with several producers. The album gives reflective reality raps with ambitions and grandeur. The lead songs “Anytime” & “Deja Vu” displays both dropping gems over Backpack Beatz production and a smooth track by Cassobeats. Going deeper into songs like “Nostalgia” “The Search” and “Darkest Hour” they touch on many topics perfectly within their artistry. One of my favorite songs “Open Letter” is just incredible, has Y.N.X speaking to his Son dropping lessons, Ali doing the same with his Daughter
He’s currently working on the finishing touches for a German-inspired project called “The Soc” produced by Samplicity a group of producers from Germany. Ali continues to show his growth and why’s he an artist you should be tapped in with.
