What began as a personal outlet for stress soon became a flourishing business for Lis Bryant. From her kitchen experiments came Baked by Lis, an extraordinary baked goods brand built on passion, community, and the joy of sharing something made by hand. In this interview, Bryant reflects on how baking helped her find purpose, how customer trust turned a hobby into a brand, and why she believes every dessert should feel personal.
What inspired you to start Baked by Lis?
It began as an outlet. Baking helped me manage my emotions when I was stressed. I made more than my household could eat, so I started giving baked goods away. Soon people began requesting specific items, and before I realized it, I had a real business on my hands.
How did your early baking experiences influence the business you’ve built today?
In the beginning, I baked for myself. When I started sharing with family and friends, they began asking for more, which turned into custom orders. That experience taught me how much people value personal touches. Even now, customization is one of the most important parts of my business.
How would you describe the mission behind Baked by Lis?
Bryant: The mission is about pouring into yourself and finding joy. My goal is to make people feel good, even if it’s just for the moment they’re enjoying one of my baked goods. I also try to make sure everyone can enjoy them. I offer vegan and low-sugar options for people with dietary restrictions.
What sets your products apart in such a crowded dessert market?
Customization is a big part of what makes Baked by Lis special. Customers can get exactly what they want, not just in design but in flavor. People appreciate knowing they’ll receive exactly what they asked for.
How has the community supported your business?
The community has been incredible. People share my posts and promote new items even before trying them because they already trust what I make. I’ve had a lot of support through features like Urban Magazine, and many customers buy from me regularly—either for themselves or as gifts. That kind of loyalty means a lot.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced early on, and how did you overcome them?
Structure was the hardest part. I’m a creative person, so the business side—menus, organization, managing orders—was a challenge. I also make a wide range of products, and with customization being such a big part of my work, it took time to find consistency.
Which menu items are customer favorites, and which are your personal favorites?
My chocolate chip cookies are number one. They were the first thing that really launched my business. Beyond that, people love my seasonal flavors. Around Christmas, coquito cakes are a hit, and in the spring, lemon and strawberry pound cakes are very popular.
How do you balance creativity and consistency when baking?
I focus on what works. I take custom orders that challenge me creatively, but I don’t stretch myself beyond what I can do well. That keeps the quality high and the results consistent.
What advice would you give to someone starting a food-based business?
Expect a lot of trial and error. You’ll need to decide whether you’ll sell locally, online, or through a physical shop. Learn the legal side of things because once people consume your products, you’re responsible for their safety. And find someone you can go to for guidance—it makes a big difference.
How does Baked by Lis give back to the community?
Bryant: I often give out samples, run sales, or include extras with orders. I also donate baked goods for community and volunteer events. If it’s for a good cause, I’m happy to send a package of treats.
What are your goals for the next few years?
In the short term, I want to launch a fully functional website so customers can place orders easily without needing a lot of back-and-forth communication. Long term, I’d love to open a brick-and-mortar bakery.
How do you define success for yourself and Baked by Lis?
Success means the bakery operating smoothly on its own. Of course, I’ll always promote and market it, but I want Baked by Lis to stand on its own reputation. My goal is to build a trusted brand that continues to grow through the quality of its products.
