2024 has been a year of incredible music, punctuated by the seismic event that was the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef. This high-profile feud ignited the internet and dominated headlines, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already big year in hip-hop. Amidst the drama, a plethora of groundbreaking albums emerged, pushing the boundaries of the genre and captivating audiences worldwide. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, artists have delivered projects that showcase the diversity, creativity, and sheer talent within hip-hop. As I look back on this wild ride, a few albums grabbed my attention and haven’t let go since.
10) 38 Spesh – Mother and Gun
38 Spesh’s Mother and Gun is an introspective journey through the streets of Rochester, NY. With production that seamlessly blends boom-bap and modern trap, the album provides the perfect backdrop for Spesh’s signature raw lyricism. Tracks like “Underestimated” featuring Benny the Butcher and Che Noir showcase his ability to trade bars with the best in the game, while “Spesh is Back” is a triumphant return, filled with braggadocious rhymes and cinematic production. “Mother and Gun” is a must-listen for fans of that up top grimey, storytelling hip-hop, proving that 38 Spesh is still one of the most talented and underrated MCs in the game.
9) Mozzy – Children of the Slums
“Talm Bout itttttt” Mozzy don’t sleep! Mozzy’s album, Children of the Slums is a raw and unflinching look at the life he grew up in on the streets of Sacramento. From the opening track, “DAMN,” to the closing track, “Better Without You,” the album is a rollercoaster of emotions, taking listeners on a journey through the triumphs and tragedies of Mozzy’s life.
Standout tracks like “Act a Fool” and “Lost it All” showcase Mozzy’s signature style, which is a blend of gritty realism and melodic hooks. The production is top-notch as always, featuring a blend of driving beats, atmospheric synths, and haunting string arrangements that perfectly accentuate Mozzy’s powerful vocals.
Overall, “Children of the Slums” is a masterpiece of storytelling and a testament to Mozzy’s talent as a rapper and songwriter. It’s a must-listen for fans of real hip-hop, and it’s sure to be one of the most talked-about albums of the year.
8) ScHoolboy Q – Blue Lips
TDE is still in the building! ScHoolboy Q’s latest album, Blue Lips, is definitely a departure from his previous work. It’s a more introspective and personal affair, exploring many sides of reflection.
The production is unexpected on this one, with a wide range of sounds, from jazzy and soulful to hard-hitting and aggressive. Q’s flow is as sharp as ever, and he delivers his lyrics with raw emotion and vulnerability.
Some of the standout tracks include “tHank god 4 me,” a gritty banger with a powerful hook, and “Blueslides,” a monologue of his current state of mind.
Overall, Blue Lips is a complex and ambitious album that defies easy categorization. It’s a testament to Q’s growth as an artist and his willingness to experiment with new sounds and styles. While it may not be for everyone, it’s definitely a rewarding listen for fans.
7) Benny the Butcher – Everybody Can’t Go
The Butcher comin’. Benny the Butcher’s latest album, Everybody Can’t Go is a testament to his undeniable talent as a rapper and storyteller.
Standout tracks like “Jermaine’s Graduation” and “TMVTL” showcase Benny’s ability to paint vivid pictures with his words.Buffalo goin strong! I don’t know what’s in that upstate NY water,
Overall, “Everybody Can’t Go” is a masterclass of hip-hop, solidifying Benny the Butcher’s place as one of the most talented and respected MCs in the game. It came out at the top of the year so people forgot about it this year, make sure to check it out just incase you did too!
6) GloRilla – Glorious
Glo is one of Hip Hop’s new darling. Charismatic, genuine etc. I’m really impressed with the artist development of this young girl.
GloRilla’s debut album, Glorious is a powerful and energetic introduction to one of the most exciting new artists in hip-hop. From top to bottom I appreciate so much about this album especially the lack of monotony.
Standout tracks like “Don’t Deserve (Featuring Muni Long)” and “Stop Playing” showcase GloRilla’s ability to mix catchy melodies with hard-hitting lyrics, creating a different feeling in each. The production is great, with a variety of producers contributing to the album’s diverse sound. Even have a gospel track? Praise God!
Overall, “Glorious” is a must-listen for fans of hip-hop and R&B, and it’s sure to be one of the most talked-about albums of the year. GloRilla has arrived, and she’s here to stay.
5) Larry June – The Great Escape
Good Job Larry! This guy just keeps climbing. Although he has a formula to his music with a certain keen approach, IT WORKS! And that’s exactly what you get on his album, The Great Escape.
Teaming up with the legendary Alchemist, June has crafted a sonic journey that effortlessly blends smooth beats with his signature playa-like style.
Tracks like “89 Earthquake” and “Palisades, CA” give the perfect feel of California living, showcasing June’s luxurious lifestyle and sharp wordplay. This album is a testament to June’s growth as an artist and a must-listen for any hip-hop head.
4) Freddie Gibbs – You Only Die 1nce
Freddie Gibbs’ latest album, You Only Die 1nce is a follow up to his 2017 album You only live 2wice.
Freddie Gibbs’ lyrical prowess, precise pocket, and smooth cadence are on full display in standout tracks like “On the Set” and “Walk it Off”.
This album was a surprise to me. I had no idea it was on the horizon. Beyond the expertly curated beats, Freddie once again taps comedian Slink Johnson to provide interludes as the devil himself. This comedic approach is a stark contrast to his portrayal of Jesus on Gibbs’s You Only Live 2wice.
Gibbs’ signature style is on full display here. The production, primarily handled by BNYX®, 454, and Pops, provides a dark, moody backdrop that perfectly complements Gibbs’ storytelling. Tracks like “Wolverine” and “Steel Doors” showcase his ability to craft intricate rhymes and deliver them with a sense of intensity.
3) Doechii – Alligator Bites Don’t Heal
I can’t praise this project enough. Doechii’s Alligator Bites Don’t Heal isn’t just an album (actually mixtape) ; it’s a cultural moment. It’s a sonic journey that blends raw lyricism, infectious melodies, and a whole lot of soul. With each track, Doechii proves why she’s one of the most impactful new artists in hip-hop.
What sets Doechii apart is her ability to seamlessly blend genres, from rap to R&B to pop. Her voice is a force of nature, capable of both delicate vulnerability and fierce aggression. Tracks like “NISSAN ALTIMA” and “BOILED PEANUTS” really smashes you in the face and will have you double checking if this is the same girl that sings “What it is?”. I know I did. She’s doing something big.
But it’s not just the music that’s making waves. Doechii’s recent performances have ignited a spark of Black girl magic that’s resonating with fans and critics alike. Her stage presence is electrifying, and her energy is infectious. She’s not just performing; she’s claiming her space in the hip-hop landscape and hopefully inspiring a new generation of artists.
Alligator Bites Don’t Heal is a bold statement. It’s a critique of self, a declaration of independence, a celebration of individuality, and a reminder of the power of Black female artistry. Doechii is more than just a rapper; she is on her way to being a culture shifter, and her impact on hip-hop is happening.
2) Kendrick Lamar – GNX
This one was tough and many will admit it came out of left field. As we all know, Kendrick Lamar has had the hip hop world in his palm this year. Capitalizing off the momentum of the incomparable Drake beef, Kendrick released GNX. This album is a salute to the west coast, in my opinion. From the visuals to the sound to the features. Honestly, it’s something that we can indirectly thank Drake for. He pulled it out of him! .
It’s a love letter to California. It’s a sonic journey through the streets he grew up on, celebrating the culture, the people, and the resilience of his community.
The album opens with “wacced out murals,” a powerful track that reflects the current mind of Lamar. His lyrics are raw and honest throughout.
I love the turn up! But I have to admit one of my favorite tracks is “gloria.” it’s a confessional. It’s a symphony of Lamar grappling with the weight of past mistakes, yearning for solace, and navigating the complexities of faith.
The title itself hints at a duality. Gloria can refer to both earthly glory (success, fame) and the heavenly glory sought through faith. This duality reflects the internal struggle Lamar portrays.
Lyrically, the track is dense with allegory. References to “sins that stain my legacy” and a desire to “wash my spirit clean” suggesting a deep-seated yearning for spiritual cleansing. This theme resonates with Lamar’s earlier works, where he often confronts personal and societal sins.
This album, although a surprise, is a certified banger. Lots of repeat value. Bet ya’ll will stop poking the boogeyman now.
1) Tyler, the Creator – Chromakopia
Tyler, the Creator’s latest project, Chromakopia I crowned to be the number 1 album of 2024, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career. The rollout was meticulously planned, with cryptic teasers and immersive visuals that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Musically, “Chromakopia” is a tour de force, seamlessly blending genres with lush production, intricate beats, and soulful melodies. Tracks like “Like Him,” “Sticky,” and “Balloon” highlight Tyler’s ability to craft captivating soundscapes while his willingness to be vulnerable shines through, as the album dives deep into personal experiences, tackling themes of love, identity, and self-acceptance with raw honesty.
Tyler’s consistent evolution as an artist is evident in “Chromakopia,” highlighting his maturation both musically and personally. This album is a celebration of his journey, balancing introspection with sharp social commentary and showcasing his relentless drive for self-improvement.
With collaborations that add unique flavors to the mix, Tyler’s passion for music and commitment to authenticity remain unwavering. “Chromakopia” is a letter to his fans, reminding us why we fell in love with his fearless creativity and undeniable talent.
