On one of her early interviews with radio host Angie Martinez, Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Ashanti broke the news about her plan to re-record her entire debut album, previously released with Murder Inc Records’ Irv Gotti.
Soon as Irv heard about Ashanti’s interview, the American record producer lashed out with a spiteful comment on Angie’s Instagram page in which he displayed his dissatisfaction about the artist’s intentions.
“She is basically trying to f*ck me out of my Masters.”
Irv claims ownership of all those outstanding records that Ashanti released while at Murder Inc. He furthermore declares ownership of a good portion of the publishing and advises Ashanti to proceed with her intentions under the COVER laws.
The referent album in the spotlight, is Ashanti’s Eponymous debut album (Ashanti), which sold over six million copies worldwide by 2003. The album has in the past been honored with eight Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award. According to the sensational R&B singer, her motive for remaking the album is to show the business side of music ownership and how important it is to have the rights to your own content.
Whoever will have the last laugh; it is the fans to decide.
